Nature reserves

SCA cooperates with county administrative boards and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in their efforts to establish nature reserves.

In many instances, county administrative boards want to grant legal protection to large conservation areas with high nature value by purchasing land and forming a nature reserve. SCA meets with the various county boards on an annual basis to discuss which areas to be sold as a nature reserve.

Between 1989 and 2007, SCA sold more than 50 areas that have become nature reserves to the Environmental Protection Agency. The areas comprise about 40,000 hectares.
