SCA is a major user and collector of recovered paper. About half of the fibre SCA uses in its production consists of recovered fibre.
SCA has for many years been a driving force in the development of production methods based on the use of recovered fibre and has developed new methods enabling the use of recovered fibre as raw material. The company has also established SCA Recycling to collect and distribute recovered fibre.
The fibre, collected through SCA Recycling, is delivered to the Group’s European packaging, tissue and graphic paper mills and meets 100% of their total recovered fibre requirements. It is also sold to third-party mills.
Recovered fibre is an important raw material for the Groups’ paper mills. During 2009, SCA paper mills globally used 4.04 million tonnes of recovered paper in its manufacturing. Approximately 1.5 million tonnes of recovered paper is collected, processed and delivered through SCA's own European collection organisation.
Besides supplying the own SCA paper mills SCA’s European Recycling operation sold app. 1,56 million tonnes to third party customers.
