Child mortality

In South Sudan, one in seven children will die before their fifth birthday, often as a result of diarrhoea, because good hygiene facilities are few. Bacteria spread particularly quickly near schools, due to the lack of sanitary facilities.

Lack of sanitary towels

In addition, due to lack of money, girls have hardly any access to basic products like sanitary towels, as a result of which they are forced to stay home during their menstrual periods. This means that they miss three months of school each year and often drop out prematurely for this reason.

SCA’s and Oxfam Novib’s projects

SCA is teaming up with Oxfam Novib’s local partner in the Mundri region of South Sudan, which was ravaged by civil war over the last twenty years:

  • To improve hygiene conditions in schools, and thereby reduce child mortality, SCA’s consumer tissue brand Edet is supporting the building of toilets.
  • SCA’s away from home tissue brand Tork is focusing on the installation of other sanitary facilities, including hand-washing facilities, and the provision of soap and hygiene lessons in schools.
  • SCA’s feminine care brand Libresse is providing free sanitary towels as well as scholarships for girls to increase girls’ prospects of a school career.

By doing this, SCA is supporting the UN’s millennium goals for education and health care. During the partnership, SCA will financially provide a basic contribution through its brands, which can be increased through special product campaigns.

Partnership sealed with giant toilet paper roll

The partnership was sealed in the Hague, the Netherlands on Wednesday, March 17.

Joris Voorhoeve, chairman of the Supervisory Board of Oxfam Novib, revealed a giant roll of toilet paper to seal the 3-year partnership between SCA and Oxfam Novib. Singer Desray wrote a song especially for this campaign, and performed it at the upstart event surrounded by schoolchildren from Elst, Gelderland.
