Hygiene products
In the hygiene area, SCA’s offering includes incontinence products, baby diapers, feminine care products and Away-From-Home (AFH) tissue. SCA is the market leader within incontinence products through its TENA brand and holds the number three position within feminine towels with the Nuvenia brand. SCA also sells Up & Go pant diapers under its Libero brand.
SCA conducts extensive tissue manufacturing that includes toilet paper, kitchen rolls, handkerchiefs and napkins, for both consumers and the AFH segment, in three production sites in northern Italy. Products are sold in the Italian market and in other countries. The Tempo brand is the market leader within handkerchiefs.
Packaging
Italy is the second largest packaging and corrugated board market in Europe. It is more fragmented than the rest of Europe with many small family companies (more than 900 competitors). The acquisition of Italcarta in 1988 and Cochis in 1997 have resulted in a market-leading position for SCA in corrugated board packaging. SCA has 21 production facilities and one design centre in the country.
SCA has also the joint venture Italmaceri with Cartiere Burgo.
Forest products
Forest Products’ sales include pulp and publication papers. SCA also sells solid-wood products through an agent and pine and spruce is shipped to the port in Livorno, Tuscany, each year. In recent years, there has been a rise in demand for wood products in Italy, since wood has become fashionable. The wood that is imported from the Nordic region is mainly used for niche carpentry products that require high-quality raw materials, such as window frames.
History
SCA established a presence in Italy in 1983, initially through the sale of AFH tissue, publication papers and pulp. Sales of incontinence products commenced a few years later.
In 1988, SCA took a large step into the Italian market through the acquisition of the Italian packaging company Italcarta – the country’s largest manufacturer of corrugated board.
SCA started selling feminine care products following the acquisition of the Nuvenia brand in 1994.
In 1997, SCA launched light incontinence products under the TENA brand in Italy. In the same year, the company completed a major acquisition of the Italian packaging company Cochis.
Another major acquisition was finalized in 2002 when SCA acquired CartoInvest, which was the leading tissue producer at that time.
